About Us
Our Story
Misty Mountain Brewing began with home brewing along the Winchuck River in 2014. Although technically “home brewing” is accurate, even back in those days our co-founder and BrewMaster was using small-scale commercial equipment.
Our BrewMaster got his start working in commercial brewing for multiple breweries in Southern California. An unexpected health scare that required open heart surgery led him to realize how precious life is, and how he wanted to spend his time doing what he loves with people he cares about.
After moving to Brookings, OR to be close to family, he fell in love with the area and the path became clear. He got the brewery license in 2014 and Misty Mountain Brewing was born. Initially, brewing and the tap room were in different locations, with a tap room off of Hwy 101 in Harbor, OR. When the “under the mountain” location became available in the heart of Brookings – with enough space for brewing, serving, and storage all in one area – the decision was made to move Misty Mountain to its current location at 625 Chetco Ave.
Our founder always loved the Tolkien novels and the fantasy genre in general. During recovery from heart surgery, he leaned on the LOTR movies and never stopped getting enjoyment out of the series. This eventually led to the idea that brewing and The Fellowship were a fantastic match, which is why we embrace the Lord of the Rings theme in our brand, products, general vibe, and fantasy-related elements found throughout our Tap Haus.
The first brew we launched, the Grey Pilgrim Pale Ale, was a huge success. It was quickly followed by the Black Gate Dark Rye Ale – still a local favorite – and as they say… the rest is history.
